This past fall the Hall of Fame conducted its second “Coats for Chester” event. The purpose was to collect warm, winter coats from the soccer community and donate them to needy families in Chester, PA., home of our Major League Soccer team, the Philadelphia Union. The program was not only very successful, but very fulfilling as it showed that soccer people can make a difference off the field as well as on. A grand total of 910 coats were distributed to needy children and adults in Chester. The coats were given to three social service agencies, who handled the distribution. They were: The Bernarndine Center Food Bank, the St. Katharine Drexel Food Cupboard and the City Team Ministries Homeless Shelter. Special thanks go to the following for their efforts in collecting coats:

~The Philadelphia Union – who helped our members collect 375 coats at their last two games of the season
~The Father Judge High School Soccer Program – under the direction of Coach John Dunlop, the Judge players collected 156 coats
~Former Widener University Player Alisha (Kozlowski) Rodgers – who along with husband Tim, single-handedly collected 252 coats in the Royersford, PA area
~The Owen J. Roberts High School “Kick4Cure” soccer event under the direction of student Brooke Miller, which collected 127 coats

The program could not have succeeded without the help of Hall of Fame inductee Bob Ludwig. Through his work Bob was able to commit the Reads Moving Systems Company to help us. Reads was invaluable as they picked up the coats from various locations, stored the coats and then on December 16th they provided the trucks to deliver all the coats to the distribution centers in Chester. Thanks to Reads Moving Systems and Bob Ludwig for their help.

As our motto states: “Honoring the Past, Building the Future” the SEPA Soccer Hall of Fame is not only committed to promoting the ‘beautiful game’, but it also strives to make a difference in our community. We will be doing our “Coats for Chester” program again in the fall of 2012. Please check back to our website in September for details.

On Saturday, August 29, 2009 the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame hosted its first ever high school tournament at the Parkwood Soccer Complex in Northeast Philadelphia. The tournament was designed to give boys and girls high school teams the opportunity to play some competitive, pre-season matches in a tournament setting. Girls teams included: Germantown Academy, St. Basil, Boyertown, and Perkiomen Valley. The boys tournament consisted of Father Judge Varsity, Chestnut Hill Academy, Hatboro Horsham, and Father Judge JV. After three well played, round-robin games, the tournament winners were: Girls: Boyertown High School and for the boys, Father Judge High School Varsity. The winning teams received the first ever Hall of Fame Tournament Crystal Trophy. But the day was not about winning, rather it was for the players to kick off their season with a positive experience. All players were given commemorative tournament shirts and were also provided lunch. The Hall of Fame intends to make this a yearly tradition, and next August will invite eight new teams to the tournament.

As part of its commitment to build soccer in the community, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame will be hosting and sponsoring, for the first time, two pre-season high school tournaments. These tournaments will showcase some of the best boys and girls high school teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Two of our distinguished members are coordinating the respective tournaments. John Dunlop, coach at Father Judge High School is handling the boys side, and Kevin Schneider, coach at St. Basil Academy is the coordinator for the ladies. These games will surely provide the most competitive and entertaining soccer at this level as some of the best teams in the area have been invited. The list of teams and schedule will be posted as soon as all teams have been confirmed.

The tournament will take place on the Saturday before Labor Day Weekend. The exact date is Saturday, August 29, 2009. The Parkwood Youth Organization has graciously agreed to allow us to use their fields for this event. They are located at 3301 Mechanicsville Road (Dunksferry & Mechanicsville), Philadelphia, PA 19154. Games for all teams will kick-off at 9:00AM and run about two hours. We will be playing a round-robin format where one team will play each of the other three teams in thirty-five minute games. At the conclusion of the games a tournament champion will be announced for both the boys and girls sides. This will be the first of what we hope will be an annual event. The players will receive a commemorative shirt to mark this historic occasion, and also be provided with lunch.

All are invited to come out and watch these college players of tomorrow. We are looking for help in defraying the cost of the event. If you or your business would like to sponsor a team, at only $150, please contact us at info@sepasoccerhall.com. You would receive recognition for your donation on our website, tournament shirts and in our program. Thanks.
